Our activities
Our activities embrace provision and help for the homeless of
Budapest and support for large families. Our day centre service is
available every day from 7am to 3pm. On Tuesdays and Fridays we
are open in the afternoons as well, from 6pm to 9pm. Every year we
operate a night shelter from November the 1st till April the 30th . All
of our services are offered for free for those in need.
In the day centre, open daily from 7-11.30 there is breakfast
distribution /tea and sandwiches/, video watching, listening to music,
watching the T.V., talking going on.
Every day from 12pm to 4pm there is freshly cooked food served. For
every person who drops by and is in need we supply clothing, shoes,
cleaning stuff, other things for personal use, blankets, reading.
We inform them about other charities, care provided by social
institutions. We offer help in case of hospitalising, temporary shelter,
job applications, official and legal matters.
Our services are run on a Christian basis, thus we share the Gospel,
talk about God’s love, pray together for their requests.
The day centre is visited daily by 100-150 homeless people. 80% of
these are men and 20% women. Those whom we provide the service
for, with little exception, have been on the streets for ages. They are
aged 20-70 and most of them are men aged 30-70.
The night shelter is open daily from 7 p.m. till 7 a.m. We can
accommodate 18 people and we can ensure supper too. The night
shelter can be booked on an advanced basis. Firstly we make sure to
provide accommodation for those, who have made a decision with
regards to serious working, saving so as to be able to start again on
their own later on.
From among the regular visitors about 100-200 would require a
regular night shelter. The Shelter foundation works effectively with
other dispatcher services and thus we are able to look for
accommodation within other homeless organisations as well.
Twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday we are open from 4p.m. to 9p.
m. as well. On these occasions we serve sandwiches and tea for
those who drop in. We also provide clothing, shoes, and needed
items. On Tuesday there is service together with praise and worship,
on Friday we have a Bible study. We offer help to their problems with
regards to official problems, need of information, and there is also a
chance for private talks, spiritual and mental support. In the evenings
we offer fresh hot supper.
Throughout our ministry we look for and keep an account of all those
organisations, institutions, shelters, churches which provide any kind
of help these homeless people can benefit from. We have a personal
contact with the runners of the accommodating places and we try to
find a shelter for each individual.
We have an orderly and continual relationship with employers so as to
provide work for those who are willing.
Clothing, shoes, preserved food, bedding, blanket and personal
cleansing kits are collected as donations and distributed among the
homeless.
In our ministry we already have some of the recuperated homeless
people, and they help their mates with their life experience and
practical advice. Those who visit us regularly are involved in different
chores, from physical work to more serious ones. We take part in
events which are important/birthday, name-day, hospital visits,
wedding, moving, funeral/ so as to emphasise that they are accepted
and precious.
During our work we make sure that we run our activities in a cosy,
familiar atmosphere: show the chance to start again, re-light hope in
the homeless people, that there is hope and opportunity for the
rebuilding of their lives. Our experiences show that those homeless
who reach to obtain faith in God, receive inner hope and an initiative
which is vital for starting again.
Thus, our workers, in their everyday service and in their private talks
continually encourage the tramps. By showing love, acceptance, and
understanding we make them stronger in wanting to strive for a
serious decision with regards to bringing forth inner and outer
changes.
With regular Bible studies we make them to know Jesus Christ’s
renewing power, His saving grace, and the opportunity to start again
with Him. For those who believe, we try to find a church and make
sure that they have friends there, and their personality gets restored
and stronger. Through Bible studies, and by living in a Christian
community God heals the broken sprit and mind .
2 Corinthians 1 v. 3-4
"Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the merciful Father, the God from whom all help comes! He helps us in
all our troubles, so that we are able to help others who have all kinds
of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from
God."
We plan
Active participation in the application announcements issued by the
European Community or by the Hungarian Government, so as to
obtain a house in which:
:: men, women, married people, families can live is separate units in a
free shelter, create the environment where they can save for the
future
:: Internet access developed in order to ease looking for jobs and
getting about
:: food service requirements met, to be able to serve cold and hot
dishes with the help of the looked after
:: storage of clothing, shoes, bedding, cleaning stuff, preserved food
:: placement of a bigger OHP, bigger room for lectures, teachings,
events
:: continuous running of a family type club
Our creed
With faith in the All Sufficient One, and relying on the Word, we are to
provide support, help, patronage, looking after physical needs for all
those who visit us.
Deutronomy 15 v.7-8
"If in any of the towns in the land that the Lord your God is giving you
there is a fellow Israelite in need, then do not be selfish and refuse to
help him. Instead, be generous and lend him as much as he needs."
