The story of the Shelter Foundation for Public Utility Mission
The Shelter Mission Foundation started off in 2004 as a public utility
foundation. The City Court registered us 12.Pk.60.723/2004/3. on the
16th of September in 2004 under the following number 9327.
The Evangelical Pentecostal Community’s Bible Collage students, in
the framework of their work experience started their service in
Budapest among the homeless people. The basis of this ministry was,
from the very beginning in the cellar of the Totally Evangelistic
Christian Community, Mahanaim Church, seventh district, Vörösmarty
u.17. In this place, once a week distribution of clothing and shoes,
feeding, counselling and bible studies together with praise and
worship were provided. The students regularly visited the homeless
on the street and helped in what they could.
The basis of our service is Jesus Christ’s message and promise:
Matthew 19v21
“ If you want to be perfect, go and sell all you have and give the
money to the poor, and you will have riches in Heaven”
Matthew 11v5
“The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are
cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor
have the gospel preached to them.”
As the years passed the body of those who served changed, the bible
student with of completion of their studies moved to the country,
carried on serving in other fields, thus different congregations,
foundations united and overtook the leading of this mission.
By this time, the 2-3 regular homeless people’s number reached to 80-
100 and the total of those registered to 1620.
In the winter of 2003/2004 daily 100-120 people took advantage of
the facilities provided, and could provide night shelter to 59 people.
We can accommodate 25 people per night
BUT THE NEED IS MUCH GREATER!
In the winter of 2002/2003, 9571 people visited the day centre, from
the 17th of January 2003 till the 15th of April 2003, we could secure
night shelter for 1344 people.
In the winter of 2003/2004 8949 people visited the day centre, from
the 1st of November 2003 till the 30th of April 2004 we could offer
night shelter for 2280 people.
During the above mentioned times those serving in this ministry
worked 6080 hours during the day and 1824 hours at night.
The increased need and the common accordance of those serving
extended the weekly 2-3 days onto a daily opening from 2002 in the
winter times, so as to be a be a ministry providing day and night
shelter.
In the beginning we worked by the support of other foundations, but
by 2004 a stable and united community was formed, which worked
with volunteers. Thus we initiated the Shelter Mission Foundation.
The ministry’s finance comes from Christian denominations,
foundations, Christian individuals in 2003 altogether 810.000 HF and
occasionally state support, for 2003 661.000HF and in 2004 1.500.000
HF.
All the goods received can reach 1-1.5 million HF if we consider the pig
slaughtered for us, the cookies, compote etc.
The input of those volunteers who have spent hours and hours
cleaning, washing, cooking, baking, administrating, shopping,
transporting, fixing, counselling, amounts to thousands of preciously
inestimable hours . The number of those who continually serve and
volunteer is 37.
